September summary - Troy Rector

I have commented in the blogs of both group 2 and group 4.

As the course kicked off, I anticipated 631 to be an intro into Adult Education.  So far, 7 weeks in, that seems to still be how I perceive it.  That isn't to stay that I'm not learning because there is a ton of information and new concepts that go along with it.

Week 1 exposed me to my fellow students.  Definitely inspired and glad to see that there is a wide range of backgrounds in which we all come from.  That allows greater discussions and different perspectives on topics.  This class has such a diverse background that it would be impossible for ua to not learn from each other's previous experiences.

Week 2 exposed me to a greater concept of what Adult Education is.  I had a pretty good grasp and knew it was by far more than higher education.  I knew it ranged from classes at a local community center to a class/ training at the workplace, and everywhere in between.

Weeks 3 and 4 exposed me to the philosophical and  historical perspectives of Adult Education.  This built on the concepts of the previous week that Adult Education is a broad range of activities in which learning occurred.  This week gave me the background and concepts on how and why it exists and how the study of Adult Education came to be a study and not just an idea/ concept.  Having one of my undergrad degrees in History, I really enjoyed this week and it added to so many other "history of" topics that I've learned over the years.

Week 5 focused on society and the different organizations that play a role.  I learned a lot more this week than I thought would.  Concepts and ideas about society and communities influencing Adult Education seemed to really stick with me.  Looking at all the educators within a community really was pivotal to understanding Adult Education.

Week 6 was also a huge week to learning for me.  Although I was pretty educated on military education and the programs and options available, the rest of the week's information was new information that exposed me to other educational programs that are specific to different demographics of people.  This week allowed me to share my personal educational journey with both military education as well as education within correctional facilities.

  1. I hate to tell you guys this, but I believe your monthly reflections are supposed to be more about your group work, how you are working together, decision making, communication, and future plans for problem solving and deadlines. :) But it is interesting to see your self-awareness as you are exposed to different foundational concepts. Thanks for your honesty.

    1. Hi Sarah,
I agree with you, but to be honest we got together kind of late. So there wasn't really anything to talk about team-wise, and it is kind of tough to fill 300 words with "haven't work as a group yet" and "I have emailed my teammates." So we went this route for this month, but our October summary posts should be more aligned with the other group posts.
